Meet the Alpe Adria Trail, a popular long-distance hiking trail scratching across three countries and connecting the Alps with the Adriatic Sea! The whole path is 750 long and runs from Grossglockner in Austria, through the beautiful mountain landscapes of Slovenia to the coastal town of Muggia in Italy. This itinerary takes your along the most beautiful stages from Kranjska Gora to Cividale del Friuli in one week.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL TO KRANJSKA GORA
Your journey along the Alpe Adria Trail starts in Kranjska Gora, a popular outdoor center in Slovenia. Surrounded by high alpine mountains, this charming town is a perfect destination for all hiking enthusiasts. If you arrive early enough, you can spend the day relaxing at Lake Jasna on visit the gorgeous Zelenci natural reserve. In the evening visit one of the local restaurants and try delicious traditional food, like kranjska sausage.
DAY 2: KRANJSKA GORA – VRŠIČ PASS – TRENTA
Stage distance: 19 km (moderate/difficult level), Ascent: 1023 m, Descent: 1221 m
The hiking adventure starts with a climb over Vršič, the highest pass in Slovenia (1611 meters above sea level). As you can imagine, the views from the top are nothing less than spectacular. On the way, you can stop to admire the historic Russian chapel built in memoriam to the soldiers who built the road during WWI. Descent to Trenta, one of the most tranquil alpine valleys. Since the accommodation options are limited, we will transfer you to the town of Bovec for the night.
DAY 3: TRENTA – BOVEC
Stage distance: 21 km (moderate level), Ascent: 451 m, Descent: 607 m
After breakfast we will transfer you from Bovec back to Trenta, so you can do this part of the trail on your own. The path follows the emerald-green Soča River, arguably the most beautiful river in the Alps. We are sure you will come to the same conclusion when you cross the numerous wooden bridges over its stream. Spend another night in Bovec.
DAY 4: BOVEC – DREŽNICA
Stage distance: 23 km (moderate level), Ascent: 554 m, Descent: 451 m
Leaving Bovec behind, your journey continues along the breathtaking Soča Valley. On the way you will pass several waterfalls, including the elegant Virje Waterfall and later the mighty Boka, the largest waterfall in Slovenia in terms of water flow. By the end of the day, you will reach Drežnica, a picturesque village at the foot of the spiky Mt. Krn.

DAY 5: DREŽNICA – TOLMIN
Stage distance: 21 km (difficult level), Ascent: 751 m, Descent: 1088 m
This stage of the Alpe Adria Trail follows the so-called Walk of Peace, which was designed to celebrate the heritage of the WWI’s battles that took place in this area. The path connects various war memorials and promotes the value of peace. Along the way there will also have the chance to enjoy the gorges natural environment of the Western Slovenian Alps. Night in Tolmin.
DAY 6: TOLMIN – TRIBIL SUPERIORE
Stage distance: 19,5 km (medium level), Ascent: 1308 m, Descent: 879 m
From Tolmin continue along the Kolovrat mountain ridge, a natural border between Slovenia and Italy. These hills were a significant battleground during the WWI, which is demonstrated by numerus bunkers and even an open-air museum which you will have a chance to visit along the way. The night will be spent in the Italian village of Tribil Superiore.
DAY 7: TRIBIL SUPERIORE – CIVIDALE DEL FRIULI
Stage distance: 23,5 km (medium level), Ascent: 616 m, Descent: 1121 m
The last stage of this hiking trip takes place entirely in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Passing through the chestnut forest and old pastures, you will soon reach the old pilgrimage center of Castelmonte, dating back to the 15th century. From there you will descent to the town of Cividale del Friuli, once an important settlement of the Lombard Kingdom. Some of the buildings from that era still stand today and form part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
DAY 8: CIVIDALE DEL FRIULI – END OF THE TRIP
This is the last day your Alpe Adria Trail adventure. However, you choose to stay longer and visit the nearby city of Trieste or relax on the Slovenian coast.
