When it comes to the flavours of the Balkans one’s first though is probably meat. Lots of grilled meat. It comes in many forms, but probably most well known is ćevapi served a in flatbread (lepinja), with chopped onions, kajmak cheese and ajvar sauce. The best ones are found in Bosnia, but you can enjoy them basically anywhere in the Balkans.
Meanwhile the Adriatic coast of Croatia and Montenegro offers spectacular sea food. Fresh daily catch is available virtually anytime and includes a huge variety of fish (sea bass and sea bream being the most popular ones) as well as squid and octopus. Southern Dalmatia is especially renown for its oysters, but don’t miss out on other types of seashells as well.
The peninsula of Istria has become an important gastronomic destination, partly because of its famous and sought-after white truffle, partly because of its fabulous wines. Further north Slovenia created a perfect culinary mix of Italian, Germanic, Adriatic, Hungarian and Balkan influences while adding special value to sustainability and local production of ingredients.
