All Balkan countries offer superb hiking experiences, but Slovenia is definitely in the lead in terms of maintenance and signposting. There are more than 10.000 kilometers of marked paths in this small country and it will take you a lifetime to hike them all. Your best attempt at it world be the Slovenian Mountain Hiking Trail. Opened back in 1953, this more than 600 kilometres long trail connects all major mountain ranges in Slovenia. If you don’t have that much time or energy, we can prepare a sorter version that only includes the highlights, such is hiking in Triglav National Park.
There are also other equally charming long distance trails such are Juliana Trail circling the Julian Alps or Alpe-Adria Trail connecting three countries – Austria, Slovenia and Italy.
Hiking in the Balkans – something for everyone
If you like the idea of an international hiking experience, there are other long-distance trails between the Balkan countries we can recommend and organise for you or a group of your hiking buddies. One of them is almost 500-kilometres long High Scardus Trail connecting the peaks of Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia while its shorter version, 192-kilometres long Peaks of the Balkans Trail focuses on mountains in Kosovo, Albania and Montenegro. There are ambitious plans of connecting all Balkan countries with three trails of Via Dinarica, but for now only one of them – the White Trail from Postojna in Slovenia to Valbona in Albania – is operative. Let us know if you are up for a challenge at ➨ info@ekorna.net.
We go even further and also have experiences in organising small and large group hiking expeditions not just in the Alps and the Dinarides but also in other mountain ranges in our vicinity including the Dolomites in Italy and even Mt. Olympus in Greece.
But don’t get scared – we don’t just specialise in long-distance intense hiking. There are tones of daily active trips we can organise and design your holidays so that you get to know the most spectacular natural environment of the Balkans without breaking (too much) sweat. The pristine nature is waiting for you to be discovered!
