Day 1: ARRIVAL TO LJUBLJANA
Arrival at Ljubljana airport. Transfer to the hotel in Ljubljana and free time to explore the Slovenian capital and its old town full of beautiful end-of-the-century mansions, located in the shadow of the gorgeous Ljubljana Castle. From its tower you can enjoy beautiful views of Ljubljana and the mountain peaks in the backdrop. You can spend the evening in one of the bars and restaurants on the banks of the Ljubljanica River, but make sure to get enough rest before the start of your Slovenia cycling tour. Day 2: LJUBLJANA – VRHNIKA
Stage distance: Stage distance: approx. 39 km, + 18 km optional to visit the Iški Vintgar gorge
Breakfast. Let’s hit the road with a ride through 160 km² of the Ljubljana swamp just south of the city. This beautiful landscape is home to some of the rarest species of European birds, plants, and insects. Visit the picturesque Iški Vintgar Gorge, carved deep into a limestone plateau and/or hike up to the church of Santa Ana which offers unforgettable views of the entire swamp. Just before reaching the small town of Vrhnika, an interesting exhibition of Tito’s cars can be seen at the Technical Museum in Bistra Castle. Accommodation in Vrhnika.
Day 3: VRHNIKA – POSTOJNA
Stage distance: approx. 32 km + 12 km optional to the Rakov Škoncjan nature reserve
After breakfast a somewhat more demanding day is waiting for you. You will be riding along forest roads and a typical karstic fields. The route takes you by Cerknica Lake – one of the largest intermittent lakes in Europe covering more than 30 square kilometres, which magically disappears in a dry season. You can stop for a picnic at Rakov Škocjan nature reserve and admire incredible landscapes formations such as two natural bridges. Night in Postojna.
Day 4: POSTOJNA – ŠTANJEL
Stage distance: approx. 42 km + 6 km optional to Predjama Castle
Breakfast. We recommend starting the day with a visit to the beautiful Postojna Cave – one of the most extensive cave systems in Slovenia. During the visit, you will stroll through a world of stalactites and stalagmites and see the endemic species of the human fish, which looks like a baby dragon. Then, you can make a detour to the imposing fortress of Predjama Castle, which is located in a crack above a 123-meter cliff and learn all about Erasmus – a lively and daring gentleman who used to live there once upon a time. Day 5: ŠTANJEL – LIPICA – DIVAČA
Stage distance: approx. 48 km
After breakfast we recommend visiting the Štanjel garden and then head to the Lipica Stables, where you will be able to admire the beautiful Lipizian horses, whose gleaming white mane and graceful dancing have earned them a worldwide reputation. Take a tour in a traditional carriage and see the horses up close in their stables. Accommodation in Divača.
Day 6: DIVAČA – MUGGIA
Stage distance: approx. 38 km
Breakfast. If you skipped the Postojna Cave, don’t worry, because this morning you can visit the Škocjan Caves, an underground canyon proclaimed a natural heritage by UNESCO. Alternatively, you can cross the border into Italy and visit the Italian city of Trieste and have a coffee at its central square Piazza Unita (19 kilometres). From there the cycling route along the Adriatic coast will take you to the ancient port of Muggia. Grab some delicious ice cream served on its lively streets, you deserved it. Night in Muggia.
Day 7: MUGGIA – PIRAN
Stage distance: approx. 37 km + 11 km optional to the Salinas de Seča
Breakfast. The last leg of your Slovenian cycling tour will take you along the old railway line which used to connect places along the Slovenian coast. You should consider stopping at the metropolitan tourist complex of Portorož for a coffee or ice cream before ending your journey in the beautiful Venetian port of Piran. Accommodation in Piran.
Day 8: PIRAN – END OF TRIP
After breakfast your Slovenia cycling tour ends. However, you can extend your stay in Piran, take a boat trip or excursion to Venice, or continue your cycling tour all the way to the Croatian city of Pula.
