You might have already been to Ljubljana on a summer City Break, but don’t let that be an obstacle to visit this charming little town again. December trip to Slovenia can be truly a magical experience for all family members. The Christmas Market in Ljubljana is located on the banks of the Ljubljanica River, in the very heart of the old town, which gets an impressive advent makeover making us believe we entered a Disney fairy tale story. Every year from the first Sunday of Advent visitors and locals are dazzled by the Christmas lights and melodies, creating a wonderful welcoming ambient.
Stroll through the main square with gorgeously adored town hall, count the lights on Ljubljana’s tallest, – but centrally not the only – Christmas tree, located in front of the iconic Franciscan Church, climb the Ljubljana Castle Hill to see the jaw-dropping city views from a bird perspective and/or take a boat trip on Ljubljanica River while sipping a hot drink and listening to Christmas carols.
Although Ljubljana is the epicentre of Christmas events in Slovenia, it definitely is not the only one. If you decide to stay longer, you might also consider checking out advent markets in Maribor, Celje or Radovljica. The magic of advent on Christmas market in Ljubljana & beyond
Year after year, the second largest city in Slovenia – Maribor – holds a charming Christmas market with numerous craft and food stalls especially typical for the eastern Slovenian region of Štajerska (Styria). Close by, the pretty town of Celje (mostly known for its magnificent castle, the largest fortified bluing in the country), hosts advent events of its own. What both places have in common are of course numerous concerts that live-up the streets and make you want to dance the night away.
On the other part of Slovenia, in the region of Gorenjska (Upper Carniola) you can experience similar Christmas excitement in the old town centre of Kranj (third largest town in the country) and the truly picturesque village of Radovljica which becomes really magical when snow covers the grounds and roofs. Meanwhile, the authorities in Bled, undoubtedly the prime tourist attraction in Gorenjska region, put up a whole Festive Winter Village where you can enjoy Christmas shopping on the shores of Bled’s famous lake. If the temperatures are right, you can take a romantic boat ride to the iconic island right in the middle of the lake and ring the wishing bell. If the lake is covered by ice, you are invited to rent skates and visit the Bled island in a truly unique way. Later, don’t forget to sit down in a local cafe and taste the famous Kremšnita dessert, a local flavor that you will never forget.
Most of the places mentioned above are also included in our week-long pre-prepared itinerary of Slovenia, which can be modified to fit a winter schedule and also include Christmas market in Ljubljana or/and other Slovenian towns. The one experience that should definitely be featured in your late-December visit of Slovenia is the Living Nativity Story in Postojna Cave. Postojna Cave is a spectacle of nature and one of the main attractions in Slovenia all year round, but it is even more special at Christmas time. More than 100 performers participate in this grandiose show – along the 5-kilometres long route you will pass singing angles, shepherds and other biblical figures who bring this everlasting story to life. It’s a unique and exciting experience that leaves no one indifferent, even if you are not a religious person.
