Being just 46,6 kilometers long, Slovenian coastline is one of the shortest in the world. There are only two countries in Europe that have shorter cost (Bosnia & Herzegovina and Monaco). But despite this fact, Slovenian coastline is regarded as one of the most diverse corners of the country: from historic Venetian towns, to picturesque salt plants; and from chic tourist resorts to gorgeous natural reserves.
The towns of the Adriatic coast and the tiny villages in its bucolic hinterland should definitely be included in every itinerary of Slovenia. Its developed infrastructure makes the coast a great place for beach holidays. Alternatively, it can only serve as a base from where you explore the wonderful region of Karst or the heart-shaped peninsula of Istria.

Explore the historic towns of the Slovenian coastline
PIRAN
Piran is – without a doubt – the most popular town on the Slovenian cost. Its historic center is among the best-preserve in the whole of Adriatic. This small town sitting on the tip of the long peninsula has been populated since the Roman times, but it was the Venetians who gave him the look and charms it still has today. Beside the many villas from that era, you will also fall in love with the amazing views from its ancient walls.
KOPER
Called Capodistria in Italian (literally meaning “boss of Istria”), Koper is the most important town of the region. Despite having a large port, Koper is full of gorgeous historic buildings. Most of them are concentrated around its main square named after Yugoslav leader Tito. There you can climb up the 36-meter high City Tower and admire the nearby cathedral, the Loggia Palace and the Praetor Palace.
IZOLA
Like its name suggests, once upon a time Izola (Isola in Italian) was a tiny island. During the French occupation in the early 19th century, its town walls were pulled down and used to fill the narrow channel separating the island from the mainland. Mayne not as pretty as Piran, nor as grand as Koper; Izola is still worth exploring. Take a stroll along its pleasant promenade, sip a glass of aperol spritz, enjoy a cone of ice-cream and watch the world go by.

The most important tourist place in the region is Portorož (meaning “the port of flowers”).
